Meditations- John 1:22-23 “Who art thou?”

“And they asked him, What then? Art thou Elias? And he saith, I am not. Art thou that prophet? And he answered, No./ Then said they unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thyself?”

When we speak of being foreknown it is the absolute certainty of Truth that settles the matter. It was certainly puzzling for the Psalmist. “My substance was not hid from thee!” he declares awed by the power of the Lord God,”and in thy book all my members were written, which in continuance were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them(Psalm 139:15-16). Flesh evidently cannot settle the matter since our memory prepares only for a short span which is blip in the eternal time. Our corruptible body is dissolved and all our glory like that of grass shall no longer knows its place, nor the place what took up its space (Ps.103:15-16). The world of flesh holds no memory because God has reserved something better. “Yet you sweep people away in the sleep of death– they are like the new grass of the morning:/In the morning it springs up new, but by evening it is dry and withered(Ps.90:4-6-NIV). A thousand years like a watch in the night, it is.

God is a Spirit and spirit that permeates the world of the Spirit is called Spirit of truth. Before Jesus would complete his ministry he promised his disciples of another helper. “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come(John 16:13). In the verse quoted we have ‘memory’ as proof of Power and Wisdom of God. Spirit is our in-house tutor, speaking of what he is privy to from the beginning of the worlds and show us things to come. John the Baptist was not formally introduced to Jesus but he knew who he was. The Spirit descending like a dove did a better job that any other. An embassy came to John evidently from Jerusalem and wanted to know if he were Christ.

What is emblem in the world of the Spirit but reality? The slain Lamb before the foundation of the world(Re.13:8) was the lamb of God in their midst. “The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world(John 1:13). In his death and resurrection Jesus proved the Wisdom component in the Father Son relationship.”But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification, and redemption(1 Co.1:30)” In eternity the Throne of the Lamb and of God establishes the truth of our calling which did not begin with our birth but in the Son who was decreed to be the Saviour of the world(Ps.2:7-8)”

When Simon was brought to him by his elder brother he know what connected them. He was the rock of offence, the Spiritual Rock and the stone that was cut without hands. “And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone(John 1:42)”.

In the Gospel of St Luke we find that Jesus knew who to look for. “When Jesus reached the spot, he looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, come down immediately. I must stay at your house today.” /So he came down at once and welcomed him gladly(Luke 19:5-6-NIV). Jesus came down on a divine mandate. He did not go footloose or fancy free but strictly on his Father’s business. Thousand years in His sight was ‘today’ in the lexicon of God the Son. So Jesus worked even as His Father worked and on entering the house of Zacchaeus what does he say, “Today salvation has come to this house, because this man, too, is a son of Abraham. / For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost(Lk.19:9-10).”

The Holy Spirit uses mode of Inversion to set off heaven against realities of the earth so emblems, names numbers are relative to one another.
