Acts-Ac.8:26-40 “The Spirit takes the lead”

And the angel of the Lord spake unto Philip, saying, Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert”.(v,26)

Jesus had already told his disciples what the outpouring of the Holy Spirit intends to accomplish. “Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.”(John 16:13) He has a place which as Jesus spoke on another occasion, and it is the heart where he was to abide with them and ‘was in you’. St John records, “But ye know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you.”(John 14:17). The difference between a believer abiding in Christ and the rest is this knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ. Knowledge is power and free will of a believer is transfigured in the same manner as Jesus revealed to his disciples on the mount.

Jesus is the true Light so when we abide in him we are seeing the world through his Light and it is absolute which way it lay. The straight and and narrow path as the Spirit in this instance showed Philip,”Arise, and go toward the south unto the way that goeth down from Jerusalem unto Gaza, which is desert.”. Where there is Spirit there is liberty but it is to serve what is true. It is thus abiding in Christ means sonship and fulfill the will of his Father. “For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.”(Ro.8:14).

It is not as Ecumenical movement would claim there are many ways to attain truth as a sop to other belief-systems. Christian Living is not for judging others but to walk the same narrow and straight path Jesus took to fulfill his Father’s will. Philip could not have taken any other route to reach Caesarea.

The Spirit had already set the eunuch of great authority awaiting for ‘someone’ to explain the passage he was reading. It is thus the landscape of faith where people, places and events serve the predeterminate counsel of God. This is the kingdom of God. The word-wide web is also set thus when a certain event as the meeting of Evangelist Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch takes place it is according to the Scripture. For this reason we need dismiss the element of chance and coincidence from our understanding of the deep things of God. (Ro.8:28) ‘All things work together’ make luck as redundant considering the power and glory of God. Furthermore God has no need of time because of this. It is the ‘now’ when such and such thing takes place. Predestination approves the free will of a believer who chose to see the world through the light of the Son. It is thus the glory of knowledge who called us to light is enlarged. So Stephen at the point of death reveals it intensity. “But he, being full of the Holy Ghost, looked up steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,/ And said, Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of man standing on the right hand of God.(7:56-57)

Philip after explaining the passage from Isaiah and preached unto him Jesus. The baptism of the eunuch was how he responded to free will.

27 And he arose and went: and, behold, a man of Ethiopia, an eunuch of great authority under Candace queen of the Ethiopians, who had the charge of all her treasure, and had come to Jerusalem for to worship,

28 Was returning, and sitting in his chariot read Esaias the prophet.

29 Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot.

30 And Philip ran thither to him, and heard him read the prophet Esaias, and said, Understandest thou what thou readest?

31 And he said, How can I, except some man should guide me? And he desired Philip that he would come up and sit with him.

32 The place of the scripture which he read was this, He was led as a sheep to the slaughter; and like a lamb dumb before his shearer, so opened he not his mouth:

33 In his humiliation his judgment was taken away: and who shall declare his generation? for his life is taken from the earth.

34 And the eunuch answered Philip, and said, I pray thee, of whom speaketh the prophet this? of himself, or of some other man?

35 Then Philip opened his mouth, and began at the same scripture, and preached unto him Jesus.

36 And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?

37 And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.

39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.

40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Caesarea.
