Bible Study-1 Sa.13:1-3 “Saul and Jonathan”

Saul reigned one year; and when he had reigned two years over Israel,”v.1

The Spirit in repeating his reign in the manner presented above serves a purpose.

‘Saul reigned one year’,

Equivalent of this we have in the genealogy of Adam.”In the likeness of God made he him(Ge.5:1) By repeating it ‘when he had reigned two years’ the Spirit is shifting the emphasis to Jonathan his son introduced in v.2. It is consistent with the narrative mode “And begat a son in his own likeness, and after his image(5:3). In the likeness of man where Adam bears relationship as double for the Son. Seth in place of Abel is presenting the first of many sons of Christ in the Body, the Church. (Christ the Head or firstborn among many brethren is the man component in the Fellowship of God with Man).

To sum: God willed Saul as the king of Israel in the likeness of Christ the Anointed One. Relationship of Father Son is recalled in Saul and Jonathan. For this reason in the following chapter Saul makes an oath that would warrant the death of Jonathan but happily it would be averted. Death of Saul would necessitate the death of his more amiable son as well. Jonathan would never fill in the role of the slain Lamb before the worlds began owing to the folly of his father.

Saul chose him three thousand men of Israel; whereof two thousand were with Saul in Michmash and in mount Bethel, and a thousand were with Jonathan in Gibeah of Benjamin: and the rest of the people he sent every man to his tent.

And Jonathan smote the garrison of the Philistines that was in Geba, and the Philistines heard of it. And Saul blew the trumpet throughout all the land, saying, Let the Hebrews hear.

As in the case of Samson who was led by the Spirit to harry the Philistines we see Jonathan creating an occasion to raise hackles among the overlords at that time. Despite the many victories this skirmish between Israel and the Philistines proves that the kingdom of Saul shall not stand. His disobedience causes his death as well as his own royal line. Here the Spirit warns us: the future is here already. Calamity that destroys a nation is not one single event but steadily chipping away its very foundations as we see playing out before our eyes. Washington Post had this news yesterday quoting Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.)on .Jan.6 insurrection ‘Yes, maybe it was indeed a riot seeking a violent re-installation of Donald Trump as president, but that’s what America was founded upon’.
