“ And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep.”
What is light or darkness in terms of holiness, to give the quintessence of God, a Spirit? Psalm 139 gives us a meaning. “The darkness and the light are both alike to thee.”(Ps.139:12) He framed the worlds by his word so nocturnal creatures bask in his glory as much as diurnal creatures. “Thou makest darkness, and it is night: wherein all the beasts of the forest do creep forth./ The young lions roar after their prey, and seek their meat from God./ The sun ariseth, they gather themselves together, and lay them down in their dens.”(Ps.104:20-22,24). Order that the ordnances of heaven maintain is divine Law where wisdom is the unseen aspects of God. “In wisdom hast thou made them all”. Human intellect cannot fathom it. For example our night shy is flooded with starlight from supernovae and yet the night keeps the integrity as God commanded. There is a clean slate principle which science may answer the expanding universe as the cause, be that as it may, Power of God works in such mysterious manner. The four beasts memorialised before the throne describe the blessedness of the man in the third beast. It is not without reason that God created the man, he was to be their steward, “and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.”(Ge.1:28)
We see the reason in following chapter, it is the man who names them. His holiness devolved from his Father made his world prosper. “And Adam gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field;”(Ge.2:20) Thus darkness in terms of holiness was the same as the light, and the name is a device to explain the unseen aspects of the invisible God.
Third aspect of holiness is the sign associated with the word. The earth was made to appear by the word (He.11:3). God names the heaven and the earth so signs establish the sovereignty of the Law or the Word.(Ps.119:89-90) Adam thus names the creation of God.The sign as a memorial has a human face “and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace.”(Is.9:6) The everlasting covenant we discuss at present has been entered between God and the Man.
