The Revelation- Re.17:1-4 “Upon Many Waters”

And there came one of the seven angels which had the seven vials, and talked with me, saying unto me, Come hither; I will shew unto thee the judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters.” (v.1)

The judgment of the great whore that sitteth upon many waters is not simply about Jerusalem which is surrounded by mountains. “As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever.”(Ps.125:2). So in order to understand the great whore we must begin from the term ‘many waters’. We came across the angel of the waters in the preceding chapter.

“And the third angel poured out his vial upon the rivers and fountains of waters; and they became blood./ And I heard the angel of the waters say, Thou art righteous, O Lord, which art, and wast, and shalt be, because thou hast judged thus./ For they have shed the blood of saints and prophets, and thou hast given them blood to drink; for they are worthy. And I heard another out of the altar say, Even so, Lord God Almighty, true and righteous are thy judgments.” (16:4-7)

Here is a quote from an earlier post of Nov. 4, 2022 titled, ” Water, Blood”

“What does it mean by this phrase, ‘angel of the waters’ found in v.5? Here is one example. “Thy way is in the sea, and thy path in the great waters, and thy footsteps are not known.”(Ps.77:19). It is the testimony of Jesus Christ which God sent through an angel to John. Similarly what is unknown to man which is not understood or grasped through human intellect,- and where only faith can enter. is where power and glory of the word reveals to you. Angel simply means the presence of God, of the word become flesh. Consequently ‘the angel of the waters’ address Jesus Christ, ‘which art, and wast,, and shall be.’ In this short colloquy between angels of heaven (altar) and of waters in vv.5-6 establishes the preeminence of the Son, ‘true and righteous are thy judgments’.

The many waters refer to the promises of God which are yea in Jesus Christ. “ For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.”(2 Co.1:20).

‘By us’ refers to the faith and works of the early church. Down through centuries the same promises of God hold fast. So in our times the ministry is for the glory of God, whether Jews or the Gentiles. By prosperity theology do you see glory of God when TV evangelists perform their routine?

The same promises of God apply to the Jews who at the first occasion open to them was for the worship of the golden calf. So the great whore sitting on many waters have made herself a bed compromising with foreign gods and pagan nations. The same uneasy alliance of the state with church historically form the crux of the king’s dream. The ten toes of miry clay joined to the iron is a corrupt church as much as the state is morally bankrupt, “Forasmuch as thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay.”(Dan.2:41).

The false prophet and the beast are the poster-boys of the latter days.

With whom the kings of the earth have committed fornication, and the inhabitants of the earth have been made drunk with the wine of her fornication.

So he carried me away in the spirit into the wilderness: and I saw a woman sit upon a scarlet coloured beast, full of names of blasphemy, having seven heads and ten horns.

And the woman was arrayed in purple and scarlet colour, and decked with gold and precious stones and pearls, having a golden cup in her hand full of abominations and filthiness of her fornication:
