Meditations-Pr.5: 16-20 Running waters”

What is the source of these running waters? Waters above the firmament is not any specific place but in the same class as we speak of our heart. Truth is written in inward parts is assigned a place. The Spirit uses such tags to create unity although dealing with shifts in standpoint from the Father and the Son respectively. For example God “lays the beams of his upper chambers on their waters. He makes the clouds his chariot and rides on the wings of the wind(Ps.104:3-NIV).” When we speak of retaining Wisdom for companion it is Christ we are talking about. “She shall give to thine head an ornament of grace: a crown of glory shall she deliver to thee(4:8-9).” Truth in our inwards covers soul spirit signifying an inner world. By the same token divine nature of God is given a place in heaven as well as on the earth. Nevertheless it is about the Father-Son relationship the Spirit wants us to focus upon. ‘Heaven is my throne’ etc; Such parallelism helps us understand this passage to which we shall come anon.

Mercy of God is like waters that God has dispersed abroad. Lamentations speak of it being new every morning. Such morning is the portion in every child of God. Weeping may endure the night but joy comes in the morning as surely as God sent his Son to the world for our salvation. These wells of salvation God did open in each of us. In the Household of Wisdom these waters we testify in our interaction with the world.”Surely God is my salvation; I will trust and not be afraid. The LORD, the LORD himself, is my strength and my defense; he has become my salvation./With joy you will draw water from the wells of salvation.(Is.12:2-3)” See note under v.16

Drink waters out of thine own cistern, and running waters out of thine own well.

16 Let thy fountains be dispersed abroad, and rivers of waters in the streets.

17 Let them be only thine own, and not strangers’ with thee.

18 Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth.

How do we distinguish between Wisdom ‘Exalt her, and she shall promote thee: she shall bring thee to honour, when thou dost embrace her.(4:8) and ‘rejoice with the wife of thy youth” The second is a straightforward commentary on the institution of marriage. “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him(Ge.2:18)”. Evidently it is divine Will of the Father we are looking at. Earthly delights of union between wife of youth has a parallel in the Church of eternity. Like heart the breast serves its purpose.”Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love(5:19). It is a precious gem set in the bezel of eternity so love is without dissimulation’. “Let love be without dissimulation. Abhor that which is evil; cleave to that which is good(Ro.12:9-NIV)”. Compare with this,”My beloved is to me a sachet of myrrh resting between my breasts(Song of Solomon (1:13)” the symbol of myrrh is the key. We have here two imageries of love set on a setting where Jesus Christ has become wisdom to us.(1 Co. 1:30).
