God is a Spirit. When we consider God as the maker of heaven and the earth we imply a design since ‘the earth was without form and void. The following verse is significant, ’And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.’ One may well picture divine Spirit sitting like ‘a refiner and as a purifier of silver’ working with material till it shines as glass. So divine mind, Power and Wisdom have impressed His glory therein as well.
‘The heaven is my throne, and the earth is my footstool,’ affirms God who is a Spirit. ‘My Father hitherto works and so am I (John 5:17),’ explains God where Jesus Christ is in a mode, the basis for the Father Son relationship. When the Holy Spirit declares that on the seventh day ‘he rested’ what remained was the shape the earth would ultimately take. The mercy seat between the cherubs was a material form as God had willed for the earth. ‘Let them make me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among them’ was similarly something material. The body prepared for the Son and the earth to be made in the image of the Son supply us clues as to the ‘Spirit of God moving upon the face of waters. This act of fulfillment by the Son, death and resurrection, orchestrates all events,- past, present and future, in heaven and on the earth accordingly. In the circumstance supplied by Lucan narrative we have the power of the Highest overshadowing Mary, a vital significance throwing light on the Genesis account.
“Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?/ And the angel answered and said unto her, The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God Lk.1:34-35)”.
Mary was a virgin and her womb void and without form, but by the power of the Spirit created the Word made flesh after the likeness of man.
Subsequent response of John in his mothers womb,- ‘the babe leaped’ as soon as Mary called on her cousin Elizabeth foreshadows the purpose of the indwelling Spirit. The saints redeemed from the earth are hinted here and they are the ones who have separated themselves like John the Baptist to prepare the way of their Saviour Lord.
The earth, which was before without form and void acquiring the image of the Son shall usher the new earth. The new heaven and the new earth shall be called the Throne of God and of Lamb.
