Who is the enemy but who stands athwart in our meditations? There are so many distractions which serve to vitiate the power of our daily walks with God. Communing with all our heart is like uploading our spiritual batteries.
The enemy would want us ineffectual. Our daily walks make truth in our inward parts stand out sharper. The Word of God is one such. “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart(He.4:12)”. Our inner world is not completely insulated and as with two worlds each world throws light about one another. We are colored by sensory inputs and when the serpent beguiled Eve it was by directing her attention to her senses. It is like mainlining into bloodstream than ingesting a pill that takes longer before it can take effect. So she looked at the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. “when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat (Ge.3:6)”,Before she could think of its consequences the eye already told her all she needed to know. It is in terms of her senses. Little did she know that looking is done by eyes but in order to know what she is looking at there is another area in her brain that processes what she is seeing. (Similarly as with hearing). Before the commandment of God with regards to eating it the serpent had deflected her thinking to follow his line of reasoning. A subtle change in emphasis was what the wily serpent needed. Such is the power of visible world where motives of our hearts and thoughts arising from our senses are entangled. The above quote from the epistle to the Hebrews warns what enemy to our souls is capable of doing unless one is most diligent. It is for this reason King David compares the tongue of the enemy like a sword. Satan used the serpent and his half truth decimated the first man and the woman to be cast out from their world. Similarly we are liable for attack from the enemy and we need guard ourselves that we are responsible for our worlds.
The enemy has several agencies and the unclean spirit which was cast out could bring in seven more spirits and similarly Satan ropes in the wicked,- enemies to our souls.
King David compares them as invisible enemy and their aim is to shoot in secret at the perfect. In our age of social media have we not seen fellows who are manipulated by remote control as it were? Like the Manchurian Candidate, one is an assassin pumped by hate fed from fake ids that spew hate and consequently he kills. News media reports show number of instances where synagogues were targeted and unruly mob threaten civic peace and chant death to their perceived enemies picked out by others and they operate with no qualms. It is thus the enemy operates. In the Parable of the Tares enemy spread heresies while all slept. Through twitter feed similarly the enemy has recruited a great army of the wicked whose ideology is filched from the playbook of the Damned. “But God shall shoot at them with an arrow;….”
“That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not./5 They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them?/6 They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep./7 But God shall shoot at them with an arrow;….” This is how God shall quell the insurrection of the workers of iniquity:.(Re.19:13-16) “…His name is called The Word of God./14 And the armies which were in heaven followed him upon white horses, clothed in fine linen, white and clean./15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God./16 And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, King Of Kings, And Lord Of Lords….”
Hear my voice, O God, in my prayer: preserve my life from fear of the enemy.
2 Hide me from the secret counsel of the wicked; from the insurrection of the workers of iniquity:
3 Who whet their tongue like a sword, and bend their bows to shoot their arrows, even bitter words:
4 That they may shoot in secret at the perfect: suddenly do they shoot at him, and fear not.
5 They encourage themselves in an evil matter: they commune of laying snares privily; they say, Who shall see them?
6 They search out iniquities; they accomplish a diligent search: both the inward thought of every one of them, and the heart, is deep.
7 But God shall shoot at them with an arrow; suddenly shall they be wounded.
8 So they shall make their own tongue to fall upon themselves: all that see them shall flee away.
9 And all men shall fear, and shall declare the work of God; for they shall wisely consider of his doing.
10 The righteous shall be glad in the Lord, and shall trust in him; and all the upright in heart shall glory.
