Meditations: Psalms 17: “Apple of the Eye”

What does the eye of the Lord God represent? Samuel faults David for his foolishness. He says,”For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him. Eye of the Lord God is His Power and Wisdom transposed into visual terms so man may understand as optic of light before him: nothing is hidden. Eyelids try as in the following verse: “his eyes behold, his eyelids try, the children of men.(Ps.11:4) It signifies light of knowledge bringing motives of man to light by the Law of the Lord.

In this Psalm David prays thus “Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings (v.8), The two wings are similar as eye lids but it is rendered in terms of man in his different circumstances as in the case of Elijah by the brook of Kerith Ravine (1 Ki.17:2-16) he was fed by a ravine. It was different when he rested under the juniper tree.  Angel of his presence prepared his sustenance. Ministry of the word is represented by the angel. “And as he lay and slept under a juniper tree, behold, then an angel touched him, and said unto him, Arise and eat(1 Ki.19:5)”. God prepares a table for His children in the worst circumstances as in the Vision would instruct us.
And when the dragon saw that he was cast unto the earth, he persecuted the woman which brought forth the man child./14 And to the woman were given two wings of a great eagle, that she might fly into the wilderness, into her place, where she is nourished for a time, and times, and half a time, from the face of the serpent(Re.12:13-14). Mercy and Goodness of God are two wings . It is made clear in this passage,”Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over./Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever(Ps.23:5-6).

Hear the right, O Lord, attend unto my cry, give ear unto my prayer, that goeth not out of feigned lips.

Let my sentence come forth from thy presence; let thine eyes behold the things that are equal.

Thou hast proved mine heart; thou hast visited me in the night; thou hast tried me, and shalt find nothing; I am purposed that my mouth shall not transgress.

Concerning the works of men, by the word of thy lips I have kept me from the paths of the destroyer.

Hold up my goings in thy paths, that my footsteps slip not.

I have called upon thee, for thou wilt hear me, O God: incline thine ear unto me, and hear my speech.

Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them.

Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,

From the wicked that oppress me, from my deadly enemies, who compass me about.

10 They are inclosed in their own fat: with their mouth they speak proudly.

11 They have now compassed us in our steps: they have set their eyes bowing down to the earth;

12 Like as a lion that is greedy of his prey, and as it were a young lion lurking in secret places.

13 Arise, O Lord, disappoint him, cast him down: deliver my soul from the wicked, which is thy sword:

14 From men which are thy hand, O Lord, from men of the world, which have their portion in this life, and whose belly thou fillest with thy hid treasure: they are full of children, and leave the rest of their substance to their babes.

15 As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.
