The Book of Isaiah-Is.59:1- 14 -“Truth in shambles”

Truth is often characterized in the Scripture as fruit of one’s lips. It is in this sense this verse  is to be understood, “From the fruit of their lips people are filled with good things, and the work of their hands brings them reward (Pro.12:14-NIV). In its context we see a man is trapped by his lies and he is termed as a wicked person.. “The wicked is snared by the transgression of his lips (v.13).” If this is true for an individual it is also true for nations. “Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned(Ro.5:12).” applies in secular context as well.

Truth in shambles is not an overnight phenomenon. One statesmen described a diplomat as one who sent by his country to lie abroad. Similarly Churchill spoke of  truth by necessity being protected by a tissue of lies. For nations security lay in keeping their national interests private. It has not however helped them establish peace. For that matter within their  borders does truth prevail? Oh no! Domestic politics is equally an exercise in lying and does not bring peace. Why one might ask? Because truth in shambles is what keeps them in business. It is how sin of one man has worked into the whole lump. when we consider a democratic nation is governed by its representatives how come we hear so much of alternate facts and transactional truth used from high places? We may be sure that truth has been dealt several blows over the decades so much so it all looks possible. The party if in time past used fear mongering and half truth to protect business interests, will be now shown for colluding with elements inimical to destroy democratic credentials of the nation. If we hear of constitutional crisis you just saw what truth in shambles does to all the grandiloquent words of Bill of Rights! Their half-truth and misinformation have hatched something horrible.  Prophet Isaiah calls it cockatrice’ eggs.

Burden of Isaiah was to make the nation of Israel rightly understand where their calamities came from. These were not from God but in staying disconnected with God. In vv.2-4 we have a resume of it. “ But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.”

So what does truth under such circumstances produce?   With Judah the manner they deceived themselves to think observing the laws made them holy and blameless. To their utter dismay seeking help from Assyria would not help them. They had become as treacherous as they themselves dealt with God. Before they could find feet came the next blow from Babylon. Were not the Jews beloved of the Lord God? It is the case of the proverb coming real, the wicked are taken in their own nets. Their Sabbath and fasts devoid of love of God were abominable. Only they did not think so. Because their hearts were far from taking delight in the Rest of God such observances were only in name. The same we could say about the white Evangelicalism in the US. Their activism has merely caused truth in shambles, so when many black churches set to blaze or Black congregation gunned down while in worship, it proves their hollowness. The ministers have not been speaking what God wanted them to speak so they are blameworthy before God. This is  a sign of the spirit of anti-christ at work. (The serpent beguiled the woman: the serpent did not tell an outright lie but did not tell the truth either.) It is what truth in shambles does. When the risen Christ in glory is what we need look, what do celebrity preachers say, “Get a load of our prosperity or drop in our mega churches where we perform our routine!” White evangelism need not preach violence but in the manner truth has been distorted, truth in shambles do witness against them.

In such an atmosphere if great majority of citizenry admit that they do not believe in God we shall appreciate what the believers are up against. Such irreverence runs into every aspect of a society and where does such ungodliness lead to?  They have hatched cockatrice’ eggs. Reading vv.5-11 shall give remarkably true state of such activism where no minister of God speaking from pulpit may be guilty of pressing a gun into the hands of another. But truth airbrushed to give Jesus look more like a prosperous white Caucasian has hatched iniquity.  Isaiah describes their confusion in v.14 “truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter”.

Behold, the Lord‘s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:

But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear.

For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness.

None calleth for justice, nor any pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity.

They hatch cockatrice’ eggs, and weave the spider’s web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper.

Their webs shall not become garments, neither shall they cover themselves with their works: their works are works of iniquity, and the act of violence is in their hands.

Their feet run to evil, and they make haste to shed innocent blood: their thoughts are thoughts of iniquity; wasting and destruction are in their paths.

The way of peace they know not; and there is no judgment in their goings: they have made them crooked paths: whosoever goeth therein shall not know peace.

Therefore is judgment far from us, neither doth justice overtake us: we wait for light, but behold obscurity; for brightness, but we walk in darkness.

10 We grope for the wall like the blind, and we grope as if we had no eyes: we stumble at noon day as in the night; we are in desolate places as dead men.

11 We roar all like bears, and mourn sore like doves: we look for judgment, but there is none; for salvation, but it is far off from us.

12 For our transgressions are multiplied before thee, and our sins testify against us: for our transgressions are with us; and as for our iniquities, we know them;

13 In transgressing and lying against the Lord, and departing away from our God, speaking oppression and revolt, conceiving and uttering from the heart words of falsehood.

14 And judgment is turned away backward, and justice standeth afar off: for truth is fallen in the street, and equity cannot enter.

15 Yea, truth faileth; and he that departeth from evil maketh himself a prey: and the Lord saw it, and it displeased him that there was no judgment.

16 And he saw that there was no man, and wondered that there was no intercessor: therefore his arm brought salvation unto him; and his righteousness, it sustained him.

17 For he put on righteousness as a breastplate, and an helmet of salvation upon his head; and he put on the garments of vengeance for clothing, and was clad with zeal as a cloak.

18 According to their deeds, accordingly he will repay, fury to his adversaries, recompence to his enemies; to the islands he will repay recompence.

19 So shall they fear the name of the Lord from the west, and his glory from the rising of the sun. When the enemy shall come in like a flood, the Spirit of the Lordshall lift up a standard against him.

20 And the Redeemer shall come to Zion, and unto them that turn from transgression in Jacob, saith the Lord.

21 As for me, this is my covenant with them, saith the Lord; My spirit that is upon thee, and my words which I have put in thy mouth, shall not depart out of thy mouth, nor out of the mouth of thy seed, nor out of the mouth of thy seed’s seed, saith the Lord, from henceforth and for ever.
