Continuing from the previous let us consider how apt is the analogy of the double edged sword to the word of God. The writer to the Hebrews uses it in this verse. “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart (He.4:12)”. It is primarily used in separating certain functions with which body fits the purpose for it is intended. It is useful to test whether each works efficiently or not. If there is some muck-up it can clear the passage. Considering such a body as that of Adam we shall observe that God created him from the ground and breathed into his nostrils. It made him a living soul. So what does ‘piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit’ would mean? The word of God is meant to determine what animates you to pursue a course of action. St John exhorts,”Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God….(1John.4:1)” He also adds in the next verse what does spirit of God affirm: Jesus Christ is of God. So the sword separates every spirit that tends to muddy the purity of the living waters with filthy lucre -and it is from mammon, from your living soul. It is the spirit of Anti-christ that Apostle John warns that it is already come. It is for this reason Jesus himself predicted,”Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?/And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity (Matt.7:22-23)” So the Word of God serves as instrument to fight heresies and simony that are brought in by so called ministers of God. They take the name of God but in their actions they serve anti-christ. So every child of God need make sure what spirit is he/she working with. These are the selfsame as pharisees of old and now calling themselves moral majority and many other equally fancy labels. Secondly the writer to the Hebrews refers to the word as ‘a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart (He.4:12).’ When Jesus taught us to learn of him and the apostle teaches us to walk’ even as he walked ‘(1 John.2:6) what makes prosperity as a point of theology? The word of God is a sword with which false doctrines and false teachers are to be resisted and vanquished. It is what we see the Rider on the white horse (Re.19:5) doing. The beast as well as his followers shall find place in a lake of fire.
Word of God is a sharp edged sword it can heal as well as cut the one who uses it wrongly. The many sects and denominations are built on heretical premises that may present a deceptive reasonableness but in the end it only an instrument for antichrist.
Coming back to the study the main subject is the everlasting covenant God ‘even the sure mercies of David’ . God is referring to the coming of their Messiah. God assures them that “So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it (v.11)”. So the word has gone out of God or rather his Will has been expressed and how it shall prosper is indicated in v.5 “Behold, thou shall call a nation thou knowest not’. The word of God prospers in the hand of the Suffering Servant and brings in the Gentiles as well as to the light.”And in that day there shall be a root of Jesse, which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious (Is.11:10).” To sum the way the word of God in working is not in the manner the nation of Israel had hitherto chosen to believe. The Gentiles are also pressed into the rank and file under the ensign of the Messiah.
The Spirit signifies the thoughts to God the Father and ‘his ways’ to God, the Son.” For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord./ For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts (vv.5-6)”
10 For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:
11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.
12 For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
13 Instead of the thorn shall come up the fir tree, and instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle tree: and it shall be to the Lord for a name, for an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.
