“The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner./This is the LORD’S doing; it is marvellous in our eyes.
(Ps.118:22-23)” We have this verse cited in the New Testament and of its importance cannot be said any more than it was spoken by our Lord Savior and his disciple. This is what God has done. God said, “Behold I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone’ of which we discussed in the previous post. The sweet Psalmist of Israel inspired of God spoke about the Lord. “I speak of the things which I have made touching the king…(Ps.45:1*)” It was the Spirit of Christ (1 Pe.1:10-12)In the Gospel of John we read the Word was with God from the beginning and also the Scripture informs us that nothing was created in heaven or on the earth. It is this eternal Word that is the basis. Abraham believed God and it was imputed to him for righteousness. So when God promises ‘Abraham in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed’ think of all families of the earth as so many beads strung together by the selfsame spirit.
It is this marvelous work that Isaiah is touching upon in this chapter. “They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine(v.24)”.
It was true that the nation of Israel waited for the coming of their Messiah-King and hoped he would restore their nation to them. It was a consolation that kept them survive their many chastisements and dispersions. But did these reversals set right their vision? Oh no. They were blind and when they saw Jesus of Nazareth they could neither deem him as their Hope nor Consolation. There is a telling detail in the exchange between Jesus and the Pharisees. They knew that Christ was and asserted that he was the Son of David. To this Jesus asked, “How then doth David in spirit call him Lord,,,,how is he his son(Matt.22:41-45)?” The Pharisees who were so called authority in scriptures were stunned into silence. They dared not ask him anymore questions from that moment. They had no understanding of the Spirit. When the Spirit of Christ gave Isaiah the truth of establishing Zion on a sure foundation, it had become his burden. God had willed it and the Son would perform a marvelous thing among the children of Israel.
It is what the last three verses indicate.
“Therefore thus saith the Lord, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob, Jacob shall not now be ashamed, neither shall his face now wax pale./ But when he seeth his children, the work of mine hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify my name, and sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel….”. It refers to the Millennial Reign of Jesus Christ. Anointing of the Spirit would cause their former animosity vanish and he shall be the Firstborn of many brethren.
There would come a moment in time that they shall appreciate what King David spoke of the Lord was once rejected of them as a stumbling stone.
14 Therefore, behold, I will proceed to do a marvellous work among this people, even a marvellous work and a wonder: for the wisdom of their wise men shall perish, and the understanding of their prudent men shall be hid.
15 Woe unto them that seek deep to hide their counsel from the Lord, and their works are in the dark, and they say, Who seeth us? and who knoweth us?
16 Surely your turning of things upside down shall be esteemed as the potter’s clay: for shall the work say of him that made it, He made me not? or shall the thing framed say of him that framed it, He had no understanding?
17 Is it not yet a very little while, and Lebanon shall be turned into a fruitful field, and the fruitful field shall be esteemed as a forest?
18 And in that day shall the deaf hear the words of the book, and the eyes of the blind shall see out of obscurity, and out of darkness.
19 The meek also shall increase their joy in the Lord, and the poor among men shall rejoice in the Holy One of Israel.
20 For the terrible one is brought to nought, and the scorner is consumed, and all that watch for iniquity are cut off:
21 That make a man an offender for a word, and lay a snare for him that reproveth in the gate, and turn aside the just for a thing of nought.
22 Therefore thus saith the Lord, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob, Jacob shall not now be ashamed, neither shall his face now wax pale.
23 But when he seeth his children, the work of mine hands, in the midst of him, they shall sanctify my name, and sanctify the Holy One of Jacob, and shall fear the God of Israel.
24 They also that erred in spirit shall come to understanding, and they that murmured shall learn doctrine.
*Yesternight before going to bed Psalm 45 was in my mind and I did not know why. I read it and this morning while I considered the portion I was to take up for the day, I could understand why the Spirit had prompted me to check the particular Psalm. It was the core value of today’s text ‘Anointing of the Spirit.’ It was thus God had provided every day for my Word ministry. All honor and glory to God.
