Apostle John overcome by the vision of the multitudes of saints must have worshiped but the angel who was sent in the first place by Jesus Christ(Re.1:1) forbade him. He was also same as he was, a fellow servant and called unto the marriage supper. For he explains: “I am… and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God:(v.10)”
What we have been examining from the appearance of the risen Christ in the first chapter all these visions were his testimony all along and of the Word (1:2). So what he saw were facets of the Word clothed as visions. All these have only one direction. “Blessed is he that readeth, and they that hear the words of this prophecy, and keep those keepeth the things that are written therein(Re.1:3). Their blessedness is in the fact that grace of Jesus Christ would have a perfect working in their lives. Righteousness of the word of God was their garment. These are called and chosen to partake the Marriage supper of the Lamb. In the foregoing Parable of the Great Banquet Jesus had added in the end,”For many are called but few are chosen (Matt.22:14).The angel forbade John from worshiping because it was the word or the testimony of Christ that made them worthy and not of themselves.
“For the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy (v.10)”. In the so many visions the Word made clear to John about things that must shortly come to pass. Had it been in so many days or years there would be no need for his emphasis “Watch ye therefore..” and blessedness of saints are in accepting true saying of God as surely unfolding before their eyes. ” If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into (Matt.24:43)”. It is the blessedness of those whose delight is in the word; and who meditate on them day and night and live accordingly: watchfulness is a state of blessedness.
“And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war (v.11).
We have heard the expression ‘heaven opened’ before. At the stoning of Stephen, a deacon he saw, “Behold I see the heavens opened…(Ac.7:53)” Blessedness of children of God is not that always the sea shall part before them as it did before Moses but the heaven shall instead open to receive them. John in exile and suffering for the testimony of Jesus Christ(Re.1:9)witnessed it, so the point is that it is the same spirit of prophecy and it is of the word we are to keep in mind. Jesus Christ is the faithful witness so we are living the prophecy as the seal of heaven placed on us: it is what the indwelling experience of the Spirit means.
“His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself(v.12). flame of fire, sharp sword out of his mouth(v.15) are aspects of our Lord Savior we came across in the vision of seven golden candlesticks. He had a name written which no man but he himself knew. In the messages to seven churches in Asia minor we came across his promise:”…To him that over-cometh will give him a white stone, and in the stone, a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth it (Re2:16).” It is what grace achieved for which no man may lay claim.
His name is called The Word of God. With it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron:. These refer to the second Psalm and when King David spoke we shall understand he predicted it by the Spirit of prophecy. He saw by the Spirit that The Son shall restore all things to God and his enemies shall be scattered as stubble and be remembered no more.
And I saw an angel standing in the sun; and he cried with a loud voice, saying to all the fowls that fly in the midst of heaven, Come and gather yourselves together unto the supper of the great God;(v.17)
The Great Banquet involves the saints and His creation. They are part of glory. When He sent his glory and gave the earth a shape it made them partakers of glory. So much so when Jesus spoke of the fall of a sparrow it was not any play of words but nothing in His creation is left to chance. They perform as foreordained they shall be partakers in his kingdom so nothing that defiles or makes a lie shall be found within(Re.22:27).
“And the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet that wrought miracles before him, with which he deceived them that had received the mark of the beast, and them that worshipped his image. These both were cast alive into a lake of fire burning with brimstone (v.20)”. We shall come across this under second death (Re.20:14)
“And the remnant were slain with the sword of him that sat upon the horse, which sword proceeded out of his mouth: (v.21)
The remnant of the army that followed the beast shall bear the number of the beast and they are wicked and ungodly.
