“…. dwell on the earth shall wonder, whose names were not written in the book of life from the foundation of the world, when they behold the beast that was, and is not, and yet is (v.8)”. Compare this verse with almost identical line from Re.13:8. “All that dwell upon the earth shall worship the beast, whose names are not in the book of life of the Lamb… ‘
While we study the Book of the Revelation we are to keep the purpose of the Spirit. It is meant as instruction in righteousness. As to the narrative body the Spirit has incorporated both from God the Father and the Son. This being the case when we come across several verses(for instance,Matt.12:31-32) identical we ought to know it is not accidental. Even where visions or dreams are considered neither the Will or the fulfillment of these shall be left to chance. God sent his Son as propitiation for the sin of whole world and whosoever refuses grace and truth shall be left out. God is no respecter of persons. The sorrow of the end times shall visit those who are left behind. Before them it is not grace but the malignancy of the Beast and shall have only one option: either die as martyr or worship him. When the Spirit speaks of the Book of life it is as though their names were never entered in it at all.
In short when Spirit inserts almost identical lines we are given an inescapable testimony of the Father-Son relationship. There cannot be one without the other (‘I and my father are one (Jn.10:30)’ Whether we are considering sin of Adam or of worshiping the Beast sin is to dismiss the will of God. Considering that it is set in God’s Time it is as though names of sinners shall not be found in the book of life.
“And the ten horns which thou sawest are ten kings, which have received no kingdom as yet; but receive power as kings one hour with the beast.(v.12)”
We are shown a scarlet beast (17:5) and the ten horns give their power signifies a coalition of ten leaders. The name king is interchangeable with any name il duce, Caesar, sultan or caliph. Remember the time is God’s Time. Against this seven kings five have already fallen (v.10) indicates past is also present in the vision. Keeping this in mind let us consider “And the beast that was, and is not, even he is the eighth(v.11). The little horn mentioned is the Book of Daniel was a clue for this king of the latter days. After the Millennial Reign when Jerusalem is trodden underfoot(Re.11:7.2) and it shall be war unto the end of desolations (Dan.7:26)’.The great city, the harlot or Babylon, the great shall be torched by the coalition of kings (v.16).
The point is that this grand coalition shall not prevail against the Lamb of which we shall come across in the following chapters.
