What is the glory of God?
Consider the mercy seat on the Ark of the Covenant. Glory of God resting between the cherubs with outstretched wings signified His presence. Under Mosaic law the presence of God or Shekinah was associated with the specific part of the temple. The Heaven is his throne and the earth is his footstool.(Is.66.1) Generally speaking his glory can never be seen apart from the whole. When God informs of the impending destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah he is specific: “I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to it, which is come unto me; and if not, I will know (Ge.18:20-21).”
What would this mean? A cry goes unto God and when God decides to take action he as the Sovereign judge sets his presence on the earth as in the case of Shekinah glory mentioned above..Here the earth signifies the cities of the plains and their overwhelming wickedness need to be addressed. In the first chapter of Genesis we read that in the creation day God gave the earth a form. Having understood a form as ‘what may be known of the invisible’ from nature,-objects and natural phenomena, let us turn our attention to answer what is righteousness? It has a a shape and it can be brimstone and fire. It can be a bow as in the case of Noah. It can be showers of blessings as well. Let us recall what St Paul speaks on the same subject. “For the invisible things of him from the creation of the world are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead; so that they (men) are without excuse(Ro.1:20).” So wickedness of man is rebellion against God where on the witness stand are objects, the earth itself. What St James do say, “Behold the hire of laborers who have reaped down your fields, which is of you kept back by fraud, crieth…and are entered into the ears of the Lord of Sabaoth (Jas.5:1-4).”Nations that heap riches on a few by allowing them take advantage of unjust laws of the land cannot escape their fate. It may be somewhat similar to the fate of the Harlot of Babylon mentioned in the Book of Revelation. Only that the Lord God is long suffering but a day shall come like a thief.
Glory radiating from the divine Mind gives the earth a form. One significance of Glory is a witness of God in Wisdom and Power. Truth is what convinces it as true. God in his throne convinced Isaiah his unworthiness. ‘For mine eyes have seen, the King, the Lord of hosts (Is.6:5). ’ It was a vision all right but the presence of God convinced the truth of his Sovereignty. Similarly ‘the heavens declare the glory of God. Like the vision of Isaiah the nature in itself is not the end but a medium for declaring the glory of God as true. Similarly Prophet Ezekiel concludes his vision and names the city, ‘from that day shall be, the Lord is there.’ It is clear. Vision of the prophet points to a day in future, in the end times. Sabbath is a holy day, where truth and righteousness are as one.
While we study the Book of Genesis creative act of God gives the earth a foretaste of his righteousness. Righteousness of God has become user-friendly where every seed or atom also has acquired truth. ‘But God gives it (seed) a body as he has determined, and to each kind of seed he gives its own body (1 Co.15:38-NIV)’. “Truth springs up from the earth, and righteousness smiles down from heaven (Ps.85:11-NLT).”
