Analysis of the Prayer of Jesus-Jn.17:1-3

In the Gospel of John we have the prayer of Jesus. The prayer is noteworthy for the intimacy of Father-Son relationship it gives us. It is poignant as well revealing of the state of his mind. In a welter of emotions we feel the note of triumph with which he recalls their Association. Before the passion the Son of man as charged with a mandate sums up his earthly ministry. He also addresses his Father with regards to the future of the Church in the aftermath of his ascension. The key to understand his Prayer is the principle of Association. In my books Marginalia and the Immanuel Factor I have explained it at length, reading of which shall make the analysis  easier to understand as well as place the topics mentioned therein according to the Will. It is Core Will. Core Will is divine Will covering both earth and the heaven.

In this context we need to consider the third group to which he alludes. People is qualified as all flesh. “The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands (Jn.3:35-NIV). We have in the Scripture the quintessence of the Almighty God. God is love. The same love we see is invested in His creative acts. When Apostle John writes about it we have this verse, “…And without him (the Word) not anything made that was made(Jn.1:3). Let us examine in terms of the Association. When the Holy Spirit writes,”Let there be light,” what we are given is the Logos concept personalized. The Spirit annotates the Will of the Lord God in terms of the Son. All through the creation account the Spirit prepares us to the many facets of the Father Son relationship. God breathes into the nostrils of Adam. According the principe of Association whatever God does is annotated by the Spirit in terms of the Son. Having discharged the mandate of the Father Jesus breathes on the disciples gathered there (Jn.20:20). His words ‘Receive ye the Holy Spirit’ echo God whose action rendered Adam a living soul.

The Holy Spirit has set the Association between God the Father and the Son, two narrative accounts as one. This is to give the earthly ministry of Jesus Christ in earth time into the Time that holds Core Will. Power and Wisdom of God validate what the Spirit the third office in the Trinity has set down. Without this getting their Association in correct context, any literal interpretation of man is bound to go wrong. Having explained this point let us  examine Adam as a type for Jesus Christ. The deep sleep which God caused to fall upon Adam doubles for the vicarious death he would taste for the Bride (Ge.2:21) Eve is the mother of all living (Ge.3:20). Literal interpretation allows that. When the Spirit writes of the rib it holds a significance. Bone is a symbol for doctrine and the Church is made up of all those who have received the Word as truth. Jesus Christ is the Word made flesh.

When we read that God had placed everything in his hands, it is not merely a few but the whole mankind. It ties up with the nature of God and when He sent his Son with a mandate we have this  word, “For God so loved the world…(Jn.3:16). Those who hated the light lest they be shown what they really are would not receive the Son. neither would they who are self-righteous. Without this free will  divine quality of love of God would not run as natural and transparent as existing between the Father and the Son. The glory that the Son had from the beginning was of self-same essence. It gave the Father personality and it is perfect; so would be with the Son. Glory is Holiness-(‘Holy is his name’) Whoever received the Son by Association is adopted into the family quality of which is light. Children of light and children of darkness are settled by response of man.

The Spirit has a clear role in setting the time frames for various events for creative acts and the redemptive plan and so on. This is Time as conceived in the Will and predestination of God cannot be understood without setting the timescales right. Jesus was born when Herod was king. It is the earth time and we can place it historically falling within the period when Jerusalem was under the sway of Imperial Rome.  The Psalmist predicts the advent of the Son of man. “I will proclaim the LORD’s decree: He said to me, “You are my son; today I have become your father Ps.2:7-NIV) . Noteworthy is that the prophecy is the fulfillment of a testimony of Jesus Christ in which he is the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world (Re. 13.8) The Father -Son relationship of the Lord God is therefore the Spirit’s commentary on the mandate God gave the Son quoted in the Gospel of John.

The Spirit not only sets the time element right but also facilitates the ministry of the Son. He touches upon God’s provision in concrete terms. In the case of tribute money “But so that we may not cause offense, go to the lake and throw out your line. Take the first fish you catch; open its mouth and you will find a four-drachma coin. Take it and give it to them for my tax and yours (Mt.17:27-NIV) ” In previous posts I have already explained the manner the Spirit made provisions for man to make peace with God. The free will is left to man and God has not spared in this department so pervasively that we may recall the Pauline assertion,”so that they (men) are without excuse. From the epistle of Peter we know the Spirit of Christ was at work just as the feet of dove found no rest upon the sloes of her feet. This dove mentioned in the episode of Noah is a symbol for the Holy Spirit. He is speaking the outpouring o the spirit upon all flesh that would come only after the Son was glorified. Similarly theophany of angels to the shepherds announcing the birth of Jesus is one way the Spirit informs us as a field ready for the ministry of Jesus. John is preeminent as to prophets who were pressed into service. Now we can appreciate the words of Jesus, ” I sent you to reap what you have not worked for. Others have done the hard work, and you have reaped the benefits of their labor (Jn.4:38-NIV)”. Jesus sent the apostles and the other disciples 70 in number for spreading the gospel. Whosoever believe in him were saved. Jesus came into his own but ‘his own did not received him not (Jn.1: 11) Great many who rejected him were content with Law of Moses and were complacent. This cannot be viewed as Total Depravity as Calvin would say.

Calvinism bases limited atonement on this basis John 17:9 where Jesus in prayer interceded for the ones given Him, not those of the entire world; Acts 20:28 and Eph. 5:25-27 which state that the Church was purchased by Christ, not all people; and Isaiah 53:12 which is a prophecy of Jesus’ crucifixion where he would bore the sins of many (not all). ( ‘And the Lord added to the church daily as many as should be saved (Ac.2:47) Predestination is the turn of the key of a believer who received Jesus as his (in inclusive sense) savior Lord. “The Father loves the Son and has placed everything in his hands (Jn.3:35-NIV).” This includes predestination and is termed the mystery of his Will (ep.1:9-12). Calvin interpreted literally and his doctrine of Predestination is wrong. Like the buttons of a shirt front if one is out of place all the other naturally would be misplaced. Unlimited Election by the same token seriously suffers on account of it.
